Mr Phix was born out of a spare bedroom in a townhome in Wilmington NC. by Ted Glackin. “I had been upgrading and servicing computers since the age of 25” now 43, “and realized that although the need for a reputable, dedicated small electronics repair business was a demand, no one company had stepped forward to be a trusted and reliable name.” Brand recognition for this industry had yet to be established. Ted began repairing laptops, desktops, and gaming systems to support the family while his wife Colleen and he had returned to school in 2009-10. Before long the spare room was packed with computers and devices. Clients were in and out of the home constantly during the day while Colleen was pregnant with Josie our third child. Originally named Mr Fix PC, the idea came from Colleen Glackin’s intuition when she said, “People don’t want a big scary corporation to fix their things that don’t give a personal service they want something and someone they can trust like a “Mr Fix”.
The founder Ted Glackin built a company on that concept that would guarantee everything they did no matter what. A company that would put customer service first above all. A company that was built on integrity first not profit. A company built on the idea that a relationship with a client was more important than a quick buck on a repair.
Ted licensed the company Mr Fix PC because when he began iPhone and device repair service didn’t exist in the area. Most of what he did was virus removals and screen repairs on laptops. Ted learned that to be successful he needed a website. So, while he went to school and fixed devices he learned graphics and web design as well. to search for the perfect name to build on that idea. Ted soon learned that MrFix-PC.com although catchy the dash in the name was never going to work. MrFix.com a plumber in Ohio since 1985 wasn’t going to give up the domain for the budget I had which was none.
With the website up and running and the introduction of google Adwords I began trying new ideas one of which was iPhone repair. The first iPhone Mr Fix repaired was from a UNCW student who broke her new iPhone 4 which had just been released in 2009. There were no YouTube videos or iFixit websites to help with the repair. I sat at a desk and reverse engineered the device screw by screw and part by part taking 3 hours to fix. The repair was successful and the UNCW student literally hugged me when I returned it. “I knew that day iPhone repair was something we needed to build on.”
By now the business had become more than a side job and a decision had to be made to focus on school or get an office and focus on growing the business. The focus of the repairs shifted from laptops and computers to iPhones iPods and iPads. The “PC” in Mr Fix had to go. One late night brainstorming revealed the idea Mr Phix it was still the name Mr Fix but with a Ph like phone! MrPhix.com and Mr Phix LLC was born. Now my task was to convince Siri how to spell MRPHIX.
